Common Concerns and Questions During Pregnancy:

Illnesses

We welcome any questions or concerns you have, however, sometimes a call to your primary care provider is the most appropriate action. We encourage you to touch base with your primary care provider for concerns about common illness symptoms including sore throat, cough, diarrhea, and nasal congestion as well as concerns and symptoms that are unlikely to be pregnancy related.

Dental Concerns

It is important to continue routine dental cleanings and checkups throughout your pregnancy. You should also call your dentist to report tooth or oral pain or concerns. If you need dental X-Rays, have the dentist use a lead apron to cover your abdomen. If you need to have dental work done, you can have Novocain (procaine) (NO SEDATIVES).

Chiropractic, Acupuncture, Massage Care

You may continue to see your chiropractor, acupuncturist, and/or masseuse during pregnancy, just inform them you are pregnant.

Mental Healthcare

You should continue any mental health care during your pregnancy. Your regular mental health providers and/or therapists are great partners to help you with any mental health changes you may experience during pregnancy and postpartum periods. If you need help establishing care with a mental health provider, let us know.

Pets

Avoid contact with cat litter during pregnancy. Cat waste can contain a parasite that causes toxoplasmosis, which is harmful in pregnancy. Have someone else clean the litter box for you. Wash your hands well with soap and water after handling any pet reptiles, birds, or small animal pets to decrease risk of diseases or infections such as salmonella that can be harmful to you or a developing baby.

Hair Color/Perms

These are OK for use in pregnancy. (NOTE: While pregnant, perms may not take as well or last as long).

Painting

Use only latex paints and paint in an open, well ventilated area.

TB Test/PPD Test

The TB skin test is safe for use in pregnancy.

Breast Pump

Many insurances will now pay for a breast pump for breastfeeding mothers. If you would like a prescription sent for a breast pump, please let us know. We will not automatically send a prescription or complete a request from a company for a breast pump without hearing directly from you, first.
